What is an AI assistant, and which one to start with
Updated 2026-11-04 · Beginner guide · 6 min read
Short answer: an AI assistant is a chat app that writes, explains and answers in plain language when you type or talk to it. If you are new, start with ChatGPT (9.3/10 in our rankings). It is free to start and does a bit of everything. Pick one, practise for a week, and only then try others.
What an AI assistant actually is
Apps like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini run on something called a large language model. It learned patterns from a huge amount of text, so when you send a message it predicts a useful reply, word by word. That is why it can write an essay outline, explain photosynthesis like you are 12, or turn messy notes into a to-do list in seconds.
It is not a person and it does not "know" things the way you do. It is very good at language, but it can mix up facts or invent a source that does not exist. Think of it as a smart, fast helper whose work you always check.
What AI assistants are good at
- Explaining things at your level, and again in a different way if you did not get it.
- Writing first drafts: emails, posts, cover letters, stories.
- Summarising long texts, articles or your own notes.
- Brainstorming ideas for projects, gifts, names or a side hustle.
- Planning: study schedules, trips, workouts, budgets.
- Practising: quizzes, mock interviews, language conversation.
What they are bad at
- Being always right. They can state wrong facts with total confidence.
- Very recent news, unless the app searches the web and shows sources.
- Knowing you. They only know what you tell them, so give context (see how to write a good prompt).
- Private matters. Do not paste passwords, ID numbers, bank details or other people's secrets.
Which one to start with
All of these have a free way to start. Scores are out of 10 from our rankings, combining usefulness, ease and trust.
| Assistant | Score | Pick it if… |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 9.3 | You want one app that does a bit of everything. |
| Claude | 9 | You write a lot or want careful explanations of long texts. |
| Perplexity | 9 | You want answers with sources you can click and check, like for school projects. |
| Gemini | 8.6 | You already use Gmail, Google Docs and Drive. |
| Microsoft Copilot | 8.6 | You use Windows, Edge or Microsoft Office. |
| Grok | 8.3 | You want real-time answers about what is happening on the web and X. |
ChatGPT is our default first pick. Our verdict: "The default all-rounder: chat, images, files and code in one app. Best first assistant for most beginners." Claude is a great second assistant, especially for writing. Perplexity is the one to use when you need to show where information came from, because it gives cited sources. Your first 15 minutes
- Open one assistant (ChatGPT is fine) and create a free account if it asks.
- Ask it to explain something you are learning right now, "in simple words, with an example".
- Reply with "make it shorter" or "give me 3 practice questions". Notice how it changes.
- Ask for something useful today: a study plan, a polite email, ideas for the weekend.
- Check one fact it gave you on a trusted site. Get used to doing that.
Staying smart while you learn
- You are in charge. Use AI to think faster, not to stop thinking.
- Follow your school or work rules on using AI.
- Keep personal details out of your chats.
- Free is enough to begin. Paying makes sense only when you hit real limits.

It depends on your school rules. Using AI to explain a topic or quiz you is usually fine. Handing in AI-written work as your own often is not. Ask your teacher if you are unsure.
